Humanism - The focus of human achievements outside the Church. Made popular during the Renaissance by Erasmus.
Maritime - Ocean; usually pertaining to trade routes.
Usury - Charging high interest rates on loans. Merchants were upset with the RCC because they outlawed this practice, which made it difficult for merchants to make money.
Indulgences - A piece of paper sold by the RCC that released a person's soul from Hell or Purgatory. Martin Luther complained about this in the 95 thesis.
Predestination - The idea established by John Calvin, that God already knows whether your soul will be saved or damned
Capitalism - An economic theory based on free trade, no government involvement, and the role of competition
